How to Use CBD Oil
For generations, people have relied on pharmaceuticals like acetaminophen , ibuprofen , or even something as dangerous and addictive as prescription opioids. However, more and more people opt to use the cannabis plant as medicine instead. An essential and often overlooked part of that medicinal cannabis family is cannabidiol oil or CBD oil for short.
CBD oil offers a range of benefits, including pain relief, mood-lifting, and relaxation. Learn how to find the best CBD oil for you as well as the best ways to use CBD oil.
Finding the Right CBD Oil for You
CBD products, especially in oil form, have exploded in popularity since the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp-derived CBD legal and products hit mainstream shelves. CBD oil is now so popular and mainstream that the global market is projected to be worth $5.3 billion by 2025 .
The explosive popularity of CBD products means many to choose from. Here are the main types of CBD oil on the market, along with their unique benefits:
CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD oil and contains no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive cannabinoid. CBD isolate is often the logical choice for people with sensitivities to THC. However, the isolate form strips away other therapeutic cannabinoids, meaning the synergistic entourage effect will be lacking.
Like CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD products generally contain no THC. However, broad-spectrum CBD oils contain other therapeutic cannabinoids, meaning that the entourage effect will activate.
As the name implies, full-spectrum CBD products contain a bounty of therapeutic compounds. However, THC content must remain below 0.3% for the product to be labeled CBD rather than cannabis. Full-spectrum CBD products activate the entourage effect and help your body synergize all the potential health benefits of the plant.

How to Dose CBD
When it comes to dosage for CBD oil, things can get a bit personal . While there’s a lot about CBD that science has a great understanding of, figuring out the perfect dose of CBD isn’t one we’ve perfected yet.
That’s because, like with other medicines, the dosage is highly dependent on a variety of personal factors like genetics, gender, metabolism, weight, age, and even your overall health. We can say that, generally, most CBD oil droppers contain about 1 mL of oil, which breaks down to about 20 or so drops. From there, if you have a standard 1-ounce bottle, we can estimate that a full dropper (1 mL) contains about 8-10 milligrams of CBD.
A 30 mL bottle of CBD containing 240 – 300 mg of total CBD is a common standard for many CBD products. We recommend using that as a barometer to figure out your optimal dosage to treat your symptoms. And remember: low and slow is the right approach to dosing cannabis. You can always take more, but you can’t take less.
Different Ways to Use CBD Oil
There is no one right way to use CBD oil . Some people prefer to place a drop just under the tongue, while others mix in their homemade creams and lotions. Here are the most common ways to use CBD oil:
Under the Tongue
Also called the sublingual method, placing CBD oil or CBD tinctures under the tongue is one of the most popular ways to use the product. Many CBD oils come in a glass bottle with an eyedropper apparatus, and use the eyedropper to place the appropriate CBD dosage under your tongue.
Expect quick results in most cases, sometimes within half an hour to 45 minutes. The speed and precision of the sublingual method make it one of the best ways to use CBD oil.
Add to Food
If you’re feeling ambitious, creative, or love to bake, you can easily use CBD oil in a batch of brownies , a cupcake, or a candy and ingest the CBD oil in edible form. If you’re looking to ingest oils quicker and easier than preheating an oven and waiting to bake, you can drop your oil dosage into a drink like juice, tea, or even water.
Once the CBD oil enters your system, it will start working quickly. Since CBD is highly bioavailable (active), your body and endocannabinoid system will react to it in mere minutes. In the end, as long as you ingest that CBD oil in some way, shape, or form, it will work. It’s shockingly simple to use CBD for issues like poor sleep and pain once you figure out your proper dosage.
Put in Creams and Lotions
DIYers might enjoy whipping up a batch of CBD cream or lotion at home. Use a carrier oil like coconut oil, along with other skin-nourishing ingredients, including beeswax, and you can create your own CBD topicals. Choose an accompanying fragrance like lavender or keep your homemade CBD lotion scent-free.
The topical application of CBD oil is one of the most popular ways to use the product since the method doubles as internal and external therapy. Simultaneously uplift your mood and moisturize your skin with CBD creams and lotions.
Capsules are an easy and portable way to experience the benefits of CBD. Some people like to take their CBD capsules in the morning and other dietary supplements, a glass of water, and healthy breakfast. The effects of CBD capsules may take a little longer to kick in than if you used the sublingual method, but this is nonetheless a potent way to experience the cannabinoid.
Vaping is a controversial cannabis ingestion method, and for a good reason. Vaporizing cannabis with vape pens and other apparatuses multiplies the risk of developing lung illness and injury . If you choose to vape, the method offers a quick delivery method, which means that you may feel the CBD effects within minutes.
How Long Does It Take CBD to Work?
CBD oil effects generally begin between 30 minutes and two hours after application or consumption. It may be necessary for you to take CBD oil throughout the day to treat specific issues, like chronic pain. Dosing CBD oil every four to six hours is standard, but you should follow the instructions on the product label or consult with your physician when in doubt.

How Many Drops of CBD Oil Should I Take?
It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked at Cannaray, and the answer is: there’s no one-size-fits-all dosage. It’s different for everyone. However, we typically recommend taking the recommended guidance on pack per day at first, then adjusting up (to a maximum of 70mg CBD per day) or down as and when you feel you’re ready. It’s all about listening to your body.

But if you want the full lowdown on decoding your dosage, we’ve got all the tips you need right here, courtesy of our Chief Science Officer, Gregor Zorn. Below, he reveals how to take your CBD oil, plus four steps that will help you decide on your perfect number of drops.
First, how do I take CBD oil drops?
It’s easy. All you have to do is squeeze your CBD oil underneath your tongue, hold it there for 90 seconds while it absorbs, then swallow whatever is left. To make it extra simple, we’ve added glass measuring pipettes to the lids of our Bright Days CBD Oil and Night CBD Oil Drops.
1. Find Your Formula
“For a CBD first-timer, your goal should be to find the right dosage that works uniquely for you,” says Gregor. “It’s different for everyone and because CBD is a food supplement and not a medication, it doesn’t necessarily change by body weight – although this can be a factor.
That said, Gregor recommends “you start low and go slow” with a small dosage. This can be anywhere from 25mg upwards, around 0.5ml of CBD oil, although we tend to find that a dosage around 50mg upwards is what our customers find optimal.
That’s why you’ll find the perfect entry-level amount in the CBD Oil Discovery Kit. A great kit for beginners containing 10ml of our Bright Days CBD Oil Drops and Night Time CBD Oil Drops. Start with 0.5 – 1ml dropper of oil (measured with the glass pipette), equivalent to 25mg – 50mg CBD.
HOW MUCH CBD SHOULD I BE USING?
Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced user, understanding how CBD works and how to use it can be somewhat confusing, especially since the industry is so new. Every day, we answer dozens of questions from our customers, but one of the most frequently asked by first-time users and experienced fans alike is: What’s the best CBD dosage?
CBD does not have an official serving size and because of this customers are haphazardly estimating their dosages. We love CBD and all its natural plant powered benefits but it’s also important that you know how, why and when to use it.
“Take one dropper of CBD per day,” is one of the most common dosage recommendation and while this can definitely be a dosage it doesn’t take into account important factors such as:
- The concentration of CBD
- The individual’s body chemistry
- The severity of the condition being treated
With that being said, there isn’t a “one size fits all” dosage – that’s why we have 3 strengths so you can choose which one to use depending on your specific needs.
Neuroscientist Nick Jikomes over at Leafly, explains that, as our body’s physiology changes, so do the receptors in our Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which are directly responsible for interactions with CBD. As a result, optimal CBD dosages will shift throughout an individual’s lifetime.
So how much CBD should you take? Use these simple tips to find out:
How to Choose Your CBD Dosage: Start small and increase gradually
Not only are we all made differently, we each have our own unique history with the use of substances, medications, supplements, and other things we put in our body. Because of this, we all have different body chemistry, and this will affect how our body reacts to CBD. As R.R Noall over at Herb puts it, “what works for your friend, may not work for you.”
We recommend starting with our 250mg or 500mg Miracle Drops (if you’re new to CBD) and gauging how your body/mind/skin responds.
How to measure your CBD Miracle Drops dosage
Using a CBD oil like Miracle Drops is one of the easiest ways to consume CBD. Simply fill the dropper, administer the oil under your tongue, then hold it there for 30 to 90 seconds before swallowing. Alternatively you can use half a dropper topically on the face or affected area of skin. The CBD will penetrate to the epidermis and travel into the bloodstream. Topical application is not as ‘strong’ as talking internally but it will help with localised pain and inflammation and approx 30-40% will work its way into the body to fight inflammation internally.
The pipette is the tool we use to administer Miracle Drops, which typically holds 1 ML of liquid. You can use this simple formula to determine how much CBD is in a pipette full:
[Total CBD in Bottle] ÷ [Number of Millilitres in Bottle] = MGs of CBD in a pipette.
For example, let’s say you have a 30ml CBD Miracle Drops that has 250MG of CBD:
250 ÷ 30 = 8.33MG of CBD per dropper
Of course this method isn’t 100% accurate, but it is more accurate than not measuring at all. Remember, start with a small dosage and gradually increase until you find your perfect dosage.
CBD for different conditions
General health, anti-inflammatory use: You could start with just 2-3 drops of CBD oil on your first day of use. This low dose gives your body time to adapt to the CBD and ensures you’re not going to take too much – you don’t want to waste it! Slowly increase your dosage. Before increasing your dose, stick with the same amount of CBD for at least a few days. Separate your dosage into smaller doses throughout the day. This may enhance the absorption rate and efficacy of the CBD oil.
You can integrate CBD into your lifestyle by putting a few drops into a bulletproof coffee, salad dressing or raw brownie recipe.
Anxiety: Research suggests around 30-200mg is the most effective. Personally I find half a dropper of 250mg (2.5%) in the morning and again in the evening is great for general low level persistent anxiety. During stressful periods a few drops under the tongue throughout the day are also super helpful. On the worst days I step up to the 500mg (5%). Remember – you can’t overdose on CBD but definitely start low and go slow so you can find the perfect dosage for you and your lifestyle. I like to keep a mood diary so I can see how my anxiety and is decreasing with my dosage and note other improvements.
Sleep: Our social media coordinator Daniella suffers from intermittent insomnia and has found the following works well – a daily dose of 1/3 a pipette of 100mg (1% ) in the morning followed by 1/3 pipette of 250mg (2.5%) in the late afternoon and a final 3 rd of a pipette before bed – 250mg or 500mg (2.5% or 5%) depending on how wired she is.
Topically: CBD has shown amazing results for eczema, psoriasis and acne as well as localised pain and inflammation. Start with a few drops, for super effective results Miracle Drops are best used alone. Can be mixed with favourite face oil or cream too.
Pain relief: Again – start low and go slow. For bad period pain I use 1/3 pipette of 500mg (5%) Miracle Drops every 2 hours which works so well. Our friends at the Honest Marijuana Co. have created this super helpful table.
Important: To be taken as part of a daily routine. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use while pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult a doctor if using other medications.
